Drying the car with a microfiber cloth: Everything you need to know!
After the car wash, there is your sparkling clean car in front of you, but still dripping wet. Let it dry like this, or dry it off? How do I avoid scratches in the paint? You can find out why you should dry it and how best to do it in the following text.
Microfiber cloths have long been the first choice for most car enthusiasts. However, there is also the old school faction who basically only allow leather rags to the car paint. Which cloths are best for drying?
Car leather cloth:
The leather cloth is good for getting the car dry. But only if the car is 100% dirt-free. The big disadvantage of leather is that the remaining dirt such as sand sticks to the surface of the cloth and causes scratches in the paint with every further wiping movement. Another disadvantage is that the leather cannot absorb as much water. These two points clearly go to the microfiber drying towel.
• The leather cloth is usually used moistened
• A car leather cloth is not as absorbent as a microfiber cloth
• Leather cloths do not absorb dirt particles into their fibers and can cause scratches when rubbed.
Microfiber cloth:
The main purpose of a microfiber drying cloth is to absorb as much water as quickly as possible and to pick up the dirt between the fibers.
How quickly and how much water the drying towel can absorb depends on the density of the fibers, which can be identified by the GSM (grams per square meter) number. A very dense cloth, i.e. one with a high GSM value, is extra absorbent. But it's not just the GSM value that plays a role, but also the fiber structure. Are you looking for a drying towel that absorbs as much water as possible? Then a large drying towel with a twisted structure (twisted fibers) is the right choice.
To dry your car optimally, you should buy a large and a small drying cloth. The large one for the hood, side surfaces and roof and the small one for places where the larger one doesn't reach as well, such as the bumper or the side mirrors. Another advantage of microfiber cloths is that they dry quickly compared to cotton or leather cloths.
It is important to wash the drying cloth occasionally to wash out the dirt particles that have picked up between the fibers.
• Microfiber cloths are very absorbent, especially those with a high GSM count and twisted structure.
• Microfibers can absorb dirt particles between their fibers and protect the paint.
• Microfiber cloths dry very quickly and are ready for use again quickly.
Does microfiber scratch car paint?
To answer this question briefly: No. When used correctly, car paint and microfiber cloths are absolutely compatible and you don't have to worry about scratches in the paint. But when can microfibers cause scratches, for example when the cloth...
• … it hasn't been washed for a long time and too much dirt has got stuck in the fibers.
• … has become too old and the fibers have hardened.
• ... lay on the floor and dirt is dragged over the paint.
We therefore recommend:
• Rinse the cloth thoroughly after each use.
• wash regularly in the washing machine.
• Do not place on the floor before use.
Then there is absolutely no risk of scratches and you can dry your car without any worries!
What should you pay attention to when buying a drying towel?
• high absorbency, the cloth ultimately has to absorb a lot of water.
• Lint-free quality, so that no lint can be seen on the paintwork after washing.
• good fiber quality, the cloth should last a long time and be washable without loss of quality.
• Rimless design and a drying cloth without a label provide additional protection for your paint.
Proper use of dry wipes:
• Work from top to bottom.
• Spread the cloth out and slowly pull it over the surfaces.
• Always pull the cloth in the same direction instead of wiping back and forth.
• Wash microfiber cloths before first use.
• As soon as the drying cloth has been left on the floor or is too dirty, be sure to wash it.
